Notre Dame’s famed leprechaun has rallied fans for decades, but the leprechaun wasn't the first mascot to help the team shake down the thunder...

Clashmore Mike, a spunky Irish Terrier originally given as a gift to Knute Rockne, inspired and entertained fans for more than 40 years before the leprechaun. From 1924 to 1965, Clashmore Mike’s antics on and off the field brought the team more than luck – the little terriers had a better record than any other mascot in college football.

Notre Dame fans of all ages will enjoy the adventures of Mikey, a modern-day Irish Terrier who comes to campus for a tailgate party with his family. Mikey gets lost from his people, but through his exploration of campus, discovers the true story of Clashmore Mike.

About the authors

Brendan O’Shaughnessy (’93) lives in South Bend and works at Notre Dame as the executive communications writer. He is a former high school teacher and a reformed journalist. He and his wife Laurel, a St. Mary’s College graduate, have three kids – Maeve (8), John (7) and Kate (4) – who look suspiciously like Mikey’s family in the story.

Susan Mullen Guibert is a Double Domer (’87, ’93) and works as assistant director in Notre Dame’s Public Relations Office. She and her husband, Jim, have two children – Patrick, 20 (ND’13) andd Grace, 16 – who bear a striking resemblance to the students on page 11. She’s also “mommy” to two dogs, neither of whom is as clever as Clashmore Mike.

About the illustrator

Andrea Pynaert lives in Mishawaka, Indiana, and has been drawing for as long as she can remember. A well-known local caricature artist, she also enjoys drawing iconic images of Notre Dame’s campus. She is the mother of two grown daughters (who bear no resemblance to any characters in the story.)
